Château Marzac with Angle is a unique and exceptionally beautiful private château set in the heart of the Périgord noir. Located just 3.5 kms from the world famous town of Les Eyzies de Tayac (Centre of prehistory in Europe) and 23 kms from the medieval town of Sarlat. This property offers the opportunity of discovering the magnificent architecture of the 13th century château, the unspoilt countryside of the Dordogne as seen from a rare panoramic view point and beautifully renovated and furnished houses each with their own private swimming pool. All combining to make a perfect holiday for any couple or family. The property of Château Marzac is not easily described as it is so immense! The private land spans over 320 hectares of forests and agricultural fields.
The river Vézère winds for 4 kms through the domain (fishing is permitted) and the prehistoric and troglodytic dwellings in the cliff faces over-hanging the river form part of the spectacular view from the property. Guests wishing to visit these sites of immense interest - dating from several thousand years BC to the middle ages and later - may enjoy guided visits of the site ‘La Madeleine’, a couple of kilometres from Marzac.
Passing the gate entrance, one arrives in front of the spectacular château. Few guests will not be taken by the beauty of the architecture, the numerous turrets, and the formal gardens. An ancient ‘Pigeonnier’ is also located by the château. As one continues a little further through the property there is the panoramic view point over looking the whole Vézère Valley, with it’s cliffs carved with prehistoric, troglodyte dwellings and a landscape to take your breath away. Out of Les Vignes Basses, and one kilometre further along the valley, on the edge of the woods, is L’Angle accommodating 12 persons.
This house delightfully unusual ! Located under the cliff guests may discover the carvings of prehistoric and middle age dwellings – carvings where ancient roof beams would have been held in place, gutters carved to avoid the rain and carvings for leisure! The house is decorated and furnished in the same style as the other houses and is very pleasant. As guests enter the house the stairway facing them is carved into the cliff face and makes a totally original welcoming feature !
To the left of the entrance is the fully fitted and fully equipped kitchen ; a comfortable dining room, seating 12, with an open fireplace ; a sitting room with satellite television and then a formal lounge with a piano and French windows looking over the swimming pool. It is in this room that the beams are still slotted against the cliff in places and traces of ancient dwellings can be seen.
There are two double rooms downstairs, one WC and a bathroom with a shower. Upstairs are two double room, two twin rooms and two bathrooms.
There are two terraces in front of the house, one under the ancient linden tree and one further along where the pretty pool is located, with sunbeds and the barbecue. The setting for L’Angle is unique and nature lovers will be in their element. The lane leading to the house continues after as a foot path into the woods where guests may freely discover a private cave and an abundance of wild life that roams throughout the property all year round.
History of the Chateau : Dating approximately back to the 13th century, the château was built on the remains of an earlier Castle. During the middle ages more stone was brought from a demolished monastery in Bergerac and was used to add on to the already existing building. Remains of monastic paintings may be seen to this day on some of the stones. The chateau has its own private chapel. In the middle of the 19th century more additions were made to the property creating again another style and period to the magnificent building. Wild life: Bring sure to bring your binoculars! There is a profusion of fauna in the grounds as local hunting is very rarely permitted and the forest unexploited. There are numerous red deer, japonese dear, stags, boars and birds of pray - an absolute paradise for nature lovers !
We feel happy to say that any guests will leave totally charmed by this unique property and tranquil private setting !
